Ô•diz•m

2019

Ô•diz•m is an animated video that explores a history of “audism,” a term coined by American Deaf Scholar Tom Humphries in 1976. The term describes various forms of hearing discrimination against Deaf people, their culture and language, as well as the assumption that one is superior based on their ability to both hear and speak. The video’s narrator is a Teletypewriter or TTY, who guides us through an imaginary museum exhibit, commenting on the various objects and histories of medical, educational and technological intervention into how Deaf people have operated in society that are on display.
