Fabrikas

2021

Fabrikas is part of an ongoing research and video project that was produced during an artist residency at the Rupert Arts & Education Centre in Vilnius, Lithuania in 2019. The project explored histories of Deaf culture and activism in the 1970s. The artists visited Deaf clubs and factories in the cities of Kaunas, Vilnius and Šiauliai, exploring the history of former communist workers’ clubs during the Soviet era and their relationship to contemporary reality for Deaf communities across the country. This video documents group interviews with former factory workers who share their lived experiences in Lithuanian Sign Language. These interviews were filmed at two significant places; the Kaunas Deaf Rehabilitation Centre and the Lithuanian Deaf Society in Vilnius (a former Deaf women’s factory).
