Huddle
2024
This film is a co-commission between Federation Square and RECESS.
Huddle explores the embodied practice of Deaf huddling, inspired by its origins in sport with Gallaudet University’s Deaf football team in the 1890s, where players used a closed formation to protect their signed communication. In the film, Deaf performers gather closely, exchanging thoughts on visibility, privacy, and the dynamics of watching and being watched. Through alternating moments of intimacy and distance, the viewer experiences fluctuating access to the huddle, revealing the resilience and agency inherent in Deaf spatial practices.
